Marco Canolintas: ‘Sprinting to win and prevent injuries’
Valuable advice from the coach and athletic trainer, Marco Canolintas, of Miami Magic FC
It’s well known that most goals scored are preceded by high-speed actions. Indeed, having higher speed peaks than the opponents often decides and changes the fate of a game, guaranteeing (almost) the victory for one of the two teams. "This is enough to make people understand the importance of sprinting in football - reports coach Marco Canolintas and then continue in this way - Another fundamental aspect is the effectiveness of sprinting as a vaccine to reduce injuries. Recent studies - explains the young Italian at the helm of Miami Magic FC - show that players who reach 90% of their maximum speed at least once a week are less prone to injury during high-speed actions. Frequent dry sprint work or exercises with the ball allow us to build stronger and more resilient athletes”. Canolintas himself then stated that he considers speed as a skill and not just a physical capacity and, as such, it must necessarily be trained as a whole. In order for these kinds of results to be achieved, it isn’t enough to make players sprint without adequate quality work. And this Canolintas knows well, indeed, since the sensitive stages of development, the athletic trainer concentrates training on running technique. This is based (as explained by one of the best experts in the world, Jonas Dodoo) on 3 main factors: projection, i.e. the development of the force horizontally; reactivity, i.e. spending as little time as possible in the contact phase; swinging, i.e. repositioning the push leg as fast as possible for a new cycle. “Based on my experience - Canolintas explains - I dedicate 10-15 minutes of activation and specific work to this aspect twice a week, and then conclude with sprints and put the trained concepts into practice. One of the best methods - he reveals - is the sprint against resistance. This can be done with tows or simple rubber bands in case you have less money. In addition to being an excellent work of strength, the imposed overload makes it possible to slow down the movement despite the athlete's maximum effort, allowing him a greater awareness of his technique and correcting any errors more easily". A key concept as well as fundamental is, therefore, the management of recovery especially for the nervous system. Generally speaking, it’s very important for Marco Canolintas to perform repetitions with recoveries of less than one minute every 10 meters of work. Specifically, it seems that it has been shown that decreasing the intensity of subsequent repetitions shifts the focus on endurance work. Finally, it now appears certain that, to obtain adaptations regarding the maximum speed, large recoveries are necessary, therefore it’s fundamental to dedicate the time needed to carry out what has just been described. "Video analysis of the sprints and speed data (GPS) - concludes Miami Magic FC manager - are essential to evaluate progress and understand the points on which to improve". (Eleonora Boccuni)
